In 1927, Edwin Perkins of Hastings, Nebraska took a bottled drink called Fruit Smack and removed the heaviest, most breakable part: the water. The concentrated powder that remained shipped in a flat envelope and rehydrated into a full pitcher at home. During the Depression, Perkins cut the price to a nickel so any family could afford it. The smiling pitcher arrived in 1954 and has been crashing through walls ever since. Hastings still celebrates Kool-Aid Days every summer.
